Lisa Levinson, MFA, graduated from The University of the Arts in 1995 with a specialty in Museum Exhibition Planning and Design. She studied ceramic tile making at the Samuel S. Fleischer Art Memorial and mosaic techniques as an apprentice to artist Izaiah Zagar. Lisa has led the design and installation of over a hundred large-scale mosaic murals in art/social service centers, schools, and community gardens.
?My work is based on my masters thesis, ?Sacred Places in Public Spaces,? which provides design strategies for community art projects. As an Artist in Residence, I work directly with participants to translate their conceptual ideas into mosaic images. I empower participants to create and communicate with each other by placing the design responsibility in their hands.?
Lisa received a Certificate of Appreciation from Mayor Bruce McLanahan II of Camp Hill, Pennsylvania and an official Commendation from the School District of Philadelphia. Her community mosaic, ?Together We Make This a Better Place,? won a Merit Award from the National Association of Redevelopment Officials (NAHRO) for the York Housing Authority. ?Out of Darkness into Marvelous Light? was highlighted by the YWCA on their national poster as a collaborative project between the YWCA of Wilmington, Delaware Coalition Against Domestic Violence, and the Delaware Center for Contemporary Art. Lisa has spoken at Universities and National Conferences on the subject of community art.
While traveling from residency to residency, Lisa has been featured in many newspaper articles and on local television. She has also received rave reviews from principals, teachers, and students:
?Ms. Levinson worked very closely with our staff and a number of parent volunteers. Her interactions with students, staff, and parents were always very positive and she immediately became one of our ?family members.? Her gentle disposition coupled with her knowledge and skills made this project one that will be remembered for a very long time. This is one of the best experiences I have been involved with during my tenure as an elementary principal for the past sixteen years!? ~ Paul M Healey, Ph.D., Principal, Camp Hill Elementary Schools
?As an art educator, I appreciate the value of art work, but also treasure the priceless value of life lessons learned by students as the mural was created. Through all phases of the project, I watched Miss Lisa weave her magic. The design team was made up of many strong-willed, at-risk students with little previous success in group-work. At our dedication ceremony, these same students praised Miss Lisa for helping them work together and create something wonderful with people who were not their best friends.? ~ Ellen Nicholas, Art Teacher, Union Canal Elementary School
?Working on the mosaic was a once in a lifetime opportunity that I was proud and honored to be a part of. It meant everything to me. Miss Levinson helped and guided us along a journey of putting our permanent mark on the school. No matter where I end up, I will always remember Miss Levinson and The South Side Elementary School mosaic that I helped complete. It was an honor.? ~ Victoria Aviles, sixth grade student, South Side Elementary School
