Picture of Craig Czury
Craig Czury (pronounced ?Chury?) has been creating poetry, poetry performances, poetry environments in schools, community centers, shelters, prisons and hospitals for over 20 years. Author of 13 books, he is published internationally, translated into Russian, Lithuanian, Polish, Spanish, Italian and Portuguese. His award-winning Poem Fusions, collaborative multi-voice poetry performances with his students, have been produced for stage, school cafeterias, arts festivals and radio all over the world.

Poetry instructor for the Pennsylvania Governor's School for the Arts (2003) and resident poet for the Govenor's School For Teaching (2004-05), Czury brings vision and depth to his students? writing. As Czury puts it, ?You can?t write until you can see.? Whether poems rising off their page through expressive voices, lines of poems interwoven with color and design for walls, PowerPoint DigiPoems laced with family and place photos on the computer...it?s with his poet?s eye that Craig passes on his wonder and enthusiasm for poetry to his young poets, who will not be writing children?s or juvenile poetry, but POETRY as windows, mirrors, doors.

from THE BOOK: A Book

I don?t know what this book is about, but I?m writing it with one eye on the page and my ear to what my readers say the page says about them. I have to trust what they remember of their lives while reading so that they become its writer. My eye blurs. When they turn their page, I turn my page and keep writing.

I?m in 6th grade. I don?t know what the instructions are, and I can?t ask because I was just told. So I make up something that has to do with writing or looking as if I?m writing, and then look as if I?m reading, listening carefully to what everyone says they?ve been reading. And when it comes to my turn I just rearrange what everyone?s been saying a little cock-eyed and I sound as if I?ve been thinking about what I?ve been writing as I?m (sike) reading it!
